Ron,
To answer your question: Cable TV, cafe latte, gas hungry SUV's, eating out, ..........I made the choice years ago about those discretionary funds. Bonsai seemed very reasonable once I eliminated the above. Ron, of course you have no choice but to raise prices to cover your costs. Life for us consumers is choice.

Well its $2.35 a gallon here and no one has stopped driving believe me. Still as many traffic Jams as ever. They can charge what ever they want and we still will drive our SUVs.

My sister's electric car is starting to look better to me though!

But there in the Netherlands a liter will get you halfway across the country

I was planning on maybe starting back to vending at the bonsai conventions. But, again, the gas prices will kill that. By the time I pay for the tables and hotel and gas I'll be broke.
I will probably hit one convention this year ( the Saint Lewis shin dig ) but that will be about it. As a visitor and not a vendor. Much cheaper.
Was just wondering how these times will affect others.
After all even if you don't go to the conventions the prices for your bonsai stuff will be higher. Everything after all travels at least part of the journey to you by truck. And that part will cost more.
How will you cope with this. Inquiring minds want to know ;o)

Ron, I think gas prices will definitely effect convention registrations, and therefore vending, throughout 2004 and maybe longer, we'll see. Those 200 to 2,000 mile round trip car trips are going to scrutinized pretty good by possible attendees.

As far as higher prices at conventions, I STILL think your average item will be cheaper to buy at a convention than via mail or ebay, etc. Plus, you can pick up the item and actually look at it and chose the best of the lot. I'm amazed at what I see people pay on eBay or art fairs , etc. over what deals I see at conventions.

do you all remember your grandparents and those corny, "well when i was your age it cost a nickle" conversations? the way things are headed, we will all be having those conversations earlier in our lives. for instance, i am 29 years old, been driving for only twelve years and started when gas prices were $.80 a gallon US. in twelve years time, prices have more than doubled for me (currently paying approx. $1.80 a gallon on average). so in conclusion, we either need to have kids at a younger age so that when we reach our mid-thirties we can have those "grandparent" conversations, or we can grin and bear it.

OK, I'm 58 and remember Gas even cheaper than Chris. I used to have a can hanging from the convertable top...donations accepted or something like that...... used to get the boys to contribute quarters and dimes.... got a couple of bucks a week....at 25 cents a gallon that wasn't to bad!

Sustainable thinking. I like that. I am moving soon from Oregon to Mass. and the cost of that trip is horrendous. Gas is over $2 here. We have done the conservation thing before, we can do it again. Nothing will ever keep me from my bonsai habit. Even if it means collecting seedlings as they sprout. It could become a whole new "thing". Seeing how many different kinds of plants can be successfully bonsaid.
As for mad cow disease and milk..............my understanding, Matt, is that the dairymen sold their cows because milk was so cheap. It wasn't worth it for them to stay in the biz. The less milk there is to sell, the more expensive it is. I live in a town right next to one of the processing companies of that one mad cow. The amount of beef being sold has not decreased at all. The vanity of the waistline has won out over the fear of mad cow disease. Go figure (no pun intended).
