Please Help Me Identify This Tree

G'day all,

I wanna wish to you all a Happy and Prosperous New year, 2003.

Yesterday I bought this little tree, thinking that it might be some kinda Ficus, now I do not think so, as when I clipped a couple of the leaves off there was absolutely no white-milky-sap. Another point is that the foliage is much darker to almost black, other than in the photograph which is flooded with flash-light.

Reckon it is good for indoors, NO?

The attached label on the pot just stated 'bonsai'.

first thought...

would be a Brush Cherry. Looks alot like the Brush Cherry I have. They make great indoor bonsai. However, thrive in the summer time outdoors with some protective summer care.

Thank you Paul,

I hope you're right as I've been wanting a Brush cherry for quite some time and to find it accidentally [last trip to my favourite garden center, for the year] as I did just yesterday, well puts a nice final touch to a fair-to-middling 2002.

Looked into your gallery [rather fancy your cotoneasters] but didn't see a pix of your Brush cherry, chance of you uploading one, have your had flowers let alone fruit?

Hi

I did get flowers and fruit on my brush cherry This last season, tho the flowers were plenty, only had a few fruit. I purchased mine as a mallsai about 10 years ago, and it did ok in its plastic pot, but I did not care for the style all to much. I transplanted it into a 1gallon pot, to help thicken it up, and let it grow some, this is where it has been every since, so this is why there are no pics of it. I will take a digital photo of it today and post it later. It is in no particular style at the moment, just growing it out.

Paul

Took me awhile...but

I finally got a chance to get the pic done today. I have three to show you, an older one from about 4 years ago, and a shot from today, and one of the foliage.

There is not much size growth in the trunk, but I know it is thickening due to some wire bites high up in the crown.....ouch. I dont check this tree regularly but found that and 6 flower buds on it today. They come in a group, each with their own stem from a single petiole. The flowers are spike like, very nice, but not so fragrant as some others can be.

First the foliage.....the inset is the flower buds found today.

This was taken, oh about three years ago. I have earlier pics of this tree, but on 35mm film, but no scanner.

This is the tree today. Just bushy, no style to it at all. I want to take cuttings from it soon. One thing I learned late in my ownership of this one is it needs a feeding of Miracid on occasion. So perhaps it wasnt getting enough food to thicken up.

This one has also dropped its leaves on me twice since owning it. Kind of un upward battle, but it isnt dead yet!!! Maybe this year I will get re-aquainted with it.

Take care.

Hi Paul,

Now quite convinced that you are correct, thank you for posting your pictures, particularly the the one with the fruit inset, if I recall correctly they had another one there, so gonna rush over tomorrow and hopefully pick it up.

Shall be keeping you informed as to how my tree goes, and am planning to wire it this coming weekend, so we shall see how it goes.

SYZYGIUM AUSTRALE - EUGENIA MYRTIFOLIA -
SYZYGIUM PANICULATUM.

Genus: Myrtaceae.
Common name: Australian Brush Cherry. Brush cherry.
Creek cherry. Creek lilly pilly.
Creek satinash. Eugenia.
Myrtifolia. Scrub cherry.

So I've been busy, this very attractive, small and what appears to be a very popular tree, has it turns out, three botanical names and no less than eight common names, is indigenous to lower/Queensland, Australia, and as I understand, round and about the northen city, Brisbane.
