Please Help Me

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME
Im thinking of air layering a jap maple and a golden elm is this possible and when is the best time to do so?is there anything else i should know on what to do,better ways to do it etc any help would be great..

Sorry i forgot to add that both bits i will try to air layer are about 2-3 inches thick
