Please Help! Emergency!

I think my juniper is dieing. It is turning brown (with hues of purple), and drying out. I have pulled it out of the pot, untangled the root mass, and cut back about a third of the roots. Is it savable? I want to take it to someone that knows what they are doing. Will that help? I bought a 44-year-old tree ($250) as my first tree, and have regretted it since. The guy I bought it from was such a liar, and now I am about to kill a tree that is almost twice my senior. Please help me!

Did it start looking bad from your "untangling" and "cut back" of the roots (after that.) Or before it? How long has it looked like this, and are you able to get any quick pictures. It might be savable.

There are many resources on this site alone to let you get to a point of knowing what you're doing. We all lose trees.

You should really take it immediately to a specialized bonsai nursery in your area for an opinion. The sad part is that with Juniper, by the time they look poor, they are often already dead.

I know Maruyama Bonsai Nursery is in Sacramento ( 916-421-6888 ) and this came up on an online search: http://www.lotusbonsai.com/

Failing that contact one of the clubs. Here are the titles of some in Sacramento
  • Sacramento American Bonsai Association of Sacramento
  • Sacramento Sacramento Bonsai Club
  • Sacramento Sekiyu Kai Bonsai Club
  • Sacramento Satsuki Aikokai of Sacramento (that's for azaleas - maybe not the best choice)
You can find addresses in the wiki under US Bonsai Clubs by State or go to the GSBF website and look under the club pages where there might be more information.

Lastly, don't give up, it's a rare bonsai enthusiast who hasn't lost a prized tree.

Regards,

Matt

My deepest condolances. Unfortunatly I cannot help. I agree with What Matt said.

Now maybe the people out there who tell newbies to go out and buy the best tree they can afford can see why I tell them otherwise!!! This is not the way to start bonsai. The trees I have killed in my learning experiance were/are inexpensive. I just think it is better to get 2-4 years under your belt before spending this kind of money on a tree.

Fellbrick,
Please do not give up! I feel it is better to go to your local discount store or box chain store and find a tree that you can turn into a bonsai ($10-20). If you don't know how I suggest getting a beginners book or two and reading them before starting. The picture attached was my first attempt at this (the tree had 3 years of training when this pic was taken) after reading Harry Thomlinsons book "Bonsai Readers Digest version".

Regarding nursery/shop owners. First this does not apply to all but many are just out to make a buck. Many will tell you that you can do whatever you want and the tree will live, just as long as you buy it. The more you know going in the easier to tell if the person is really trying to help or trying to make a buck.

Just for fun. Did he tell you that you could keep the juniper inside? If you post more info regarding how it was kept we may be able to help figure out what whent wrong. I would take core of your tree first though, but please keep us informed.

That isn't the tree. It's Tucker's first tree. (I was a little confused myself)

Ok now I'm confused even more.

Fellbrick- like newt said, if you're able to tell us how it was treated or kept we might be able to get an idea of what happened to your juniper. Best of luck, and stay with bonsai!

Update

I took my tree to a Bonsai Nursery, and showed it to an expert. He knew instantly the problem was the soil. The crook I bought it from had put in potting soil only, so the root mass was rotting. He repotted it in rocks only, added a growth hormone, taped it up so it wouldn't move, cut the dead foliage off, and gave a 50/50 prognosis. So that is where it sits now, I have to sit and wait.
