Plant Identification
I dug up a plant from our property that wasn't doing much in the year and a half we've been here (northern California). It seems to have bonsai potential but I don't know what it is. It's deciduous and has tiny yellow flowers and new leaves right now. The leaves are very ridged and the longest they get is about one inch. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks, Sharon |

If that thing in the first two pictures is a yellow flower, then I would be willing to bet it is either a witch or winter hazel. I have a winter hazel which is leafing out and looks exactly like that. I grow tons of hornbeam, and do not think that this is one. Here is a pic of my winter hazel.
hope this helps, bonsaimeister

Yes, hazel family was my first thought.

It also looks like alder to me. If that's the flower in the right-hand pic, it's too blurry to make a positive ID. Can you get a close-up of the flower that is more in focus? The winter hazel I've seen have more strap-like petals and yours are more rounded lobe-shaped. Again, I can't really tell as the pic is out of focus.

o.K. Here is a pic of a leaf just coming out on one of my alder. I am not fammilar with the alder family flowers but in my opnion the alder leaves are far more symetrical in pattern than the winter hazel I have. Also, we could determine the size of the leaf, as alder are waaayyyyy bigger, but I am pretty confident it is a winter hazel. (sorry about the fuzziness. I cannot get it to go away) At this time of year hazel leaves are generally a darker green than the alder.
hope this helps, bonsaimeister

I Googled images and saw photos of my type of plant - it's definitely a Winter Hazel (Corylopsis pauciflora). Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) has strappy leaves.
Now, to just get it healthy... |
