Pinus Virginiana

Greetings all.....I've been working this Virgina Pine for a year or so. I am still trying to figure out the foliage and its characteristics. While it is more than willing to back bud with about 3 flushes a year. The control and bud selection can be maddening. It makes me want to approach this like I would a Juniper.

Can anyone share there experience with this species.

Are these trees all connected to one base? If so you ought to plan on working down the soil mass to expose the base.

Vance, yep... clump style. The base is pretty much exposed, its just hiden from view. I mulched the top of the soil with needles to encourage mycorrihazal growth which paid of in spades this year.

I have a couple virginia pines I've been working on as well too. Not much branch work yet; I put them into the ground to fatten up a bit. The back budding seems promising. They are one of my favorite trees because of their gnarled character and toughness. I dug them up from an old strip mine spoil dump.
