pinus pinaster
Hi all
I have the opportunity to collect seedlings of maritime pine (P. pinaster). I've searched some background info, but as I'm aware there are few bonsai of this species. Apparently they are fast growing, and should be suited to the climate in the southern UK where I live. However, it's said that they are short lived, maybe only 150 yrs, and I'm unsure of their suitability as bonsai. Does anyone have anymore information about these trees? They seem to backbud easily (personal observation), and look pretty hardy, as thy seem to grow everywhere, even in urban areas. Cheers

I refuse to live for 150 years, so I would say go for it.
There are a lot of trees used for bonsai that are good for far fewer years than that, blueberry, birch as examples. For free all you do is waste your time if they don't work, and I am not sure I would call it wasting either because you should at least learn from the experiance. You have a chance to be a pioneer. ![]() |

thanks! I have a feeling that, given bonsai care, they will live longer than their 'natural' age- got to collect them first though. A pioneer? I'm honoured. I'll keep everyone updated. They have a deeply fissured, reddish bark and are certainly very attractive. An invasive species in the U.S apparently.
