Pinus nigra question

Do I stand a chance growing the Austrian Pine in the ground in S Florida? Nursery has some rather tall ones from Monrovia that would substitute my jbp needs for a large pine in an oriental garden.
Thanks for any tips....

I would hope so, if a local nursery is selling them for use in the landscape. Florida still has cool (even if not freezing) winters. What did the nursery tell you?

The nursery is in California or a zone much cooler than mine. I think they were also being stored in a nursery in Jacksonville Florida. They look like a robust thunbergia. This zone discription is for Austrian pine. I am clearly out of it. Nursery is just testing them out down here. They have no experience with it in S Florida Heather.

Hi KK, I have one here in South Texas.
Still in the Nursery pot but handles the full sun quite well.

My gut tells me they won't make it in your neighborhood, either as bonsai or landscape trees. Not enough winter cold, I would think. You could always ask Graydon...if anyone would know about growing them in Florida, he would.

Maybe some info on the originating nursery might help. If these growing conditions are anything like your place it might work. Monrovia Nursery is in a suburb of L. A., California at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. It never snows there but it occasionally freezes. The summers can hit 103 and dry. The nursery is right in the path of the dessicating Santa Ana winds too. Hope this helps.

kong,
Sorry buddy, they suffer in the humidity. They make it in the mediteranian, but in the dry spots. Have you seen Canary Island Pines? I have zone envy and kill them frequently here in Arkansas.

Hey Kong... I have about a 5 footer from Monrovia that has been in the ground and doing well for a couple years now. Like you, I saw it as a good subsitute for JBP. I also have several smaller ones still in nursery containers that are not doing bad but they are not thriving. I am in zone 8...midlands of South Carolina. However, if I were you, I would find one of those sweet BC and place that in the garden
