Pinus Nigra for dummies

Hello,

For the past year I have been watching one of these trees at a landscape company, the tree is large trunked and old living in a 10 gal pot.The pine already looks like a Bonsai for the most part so I want it of-corse.My experince with pines is limited to caring for a young easten white for the past 2 years.I just bought a "training" Pinus Nigra to learn on before I commit to the meat and potatos.

My test tree has a decent trunk thickness and I have removed all branches I will not need in the final design and chosen a leader. Now of-corse all the foliage is located at the end of the sub branching.I plucked out all the newly grown tufts of needles. When and how do I get this tree to fill in I guess is my main question...as always all help is appreciated and Thanks!

I guess none of us have much experience with this type of pine. It looks like a young JBP (Japanese black pine) so, maybe you can try the techniques suggested for JBP. These can be found in several places ... on the web, books and magazines.

Remember, I'm just saying maybe ... I've never worked with one.

Training techniques for the Austrian pine are similar to JBP but it responds more slowly and weakly.
I think your pine has had enough work already for this year. Fertilize it well this year and keep it in full sun. Watch the soil and water it only when its dryish.
Next year if its healthy more training can be done.
