Pine Question
I have a black pine seedling and a white pine seedling that both have about 1/2" trunks, but have no foliage till 2/3 of the way up the trunk. They are about 18" high. I want to make shohin out of them. Is the only way to get foliage down low by grafting? If I cut them back on the top, would they sprout any new growth down low? I don't want to end up with a couple of dead stumps.

With 1/2" trunks, they aren't seedlings anymore. You may be able to wrap the trunks tightly with raffia, wire them and shape into tangled masses - as the "squashed Juniper" technique. Otherwise, you may have to let the trees determine what size they will be as bonsai. Otherwise you would probably need to graft into the trunks to be assured at having foliage in the lower four inches or so, where you'd need it for shohin.
Good luck! Matt
