Pine Propagation
Can you propagate a pine from a candle? I got a 6" candle from a large slash pine and I want to propagate it.

Actually, yes. I've never tried, but I've seen it detailed in one of my Japanese pine books. It is treated as a cutting (cutting tray covered with a plastic tent, etc..) and grows as does a cutting.

Andy,
Wow, that's interesting. I stand corrected. Can you discern any details of the technique, i.e., how open should the candles be? Where are they cut relative to teh pre-fascicles? Using hormones? Could be interesting to try it out. Jim TX |

I found the book and it shows them being taken in March (in Japan - use your own judgement) and the needles have not yet begun to break. They are broken off, then trimmed with a sharp razor to 3-4 cm. Fine soil (akadama) is prepared in a pot, holes are made in the wet soil to about 1/3 the depth of the candle nub. The candle nubs placed to in the holes (with 2/3 of their length exposed) and they're watered in again. The candles are misted daily and it shows them with decent roots in only 1 month (!). Roots are slightly trimmed and the "cuttings" are planted in individual 4" pots and grown normally.
Sounds interesting. Kind regards, Andy Rutledge zone 8, Texas http://www.bunjindesign.com/bonsai/ |

I'll bet if it worked it would be a great way to get low sacrifice branches to use for thickening the base of the trunk. A misting system would probably help too.
