"We have some fantastic bonsai with deadwood carving at the club shows but they are consistantly overlooked and never give any respect. It's sad really because it has made a few people leave because of it."

Now THAT is sad!

Vance,
I agree with your statement exactly.
Reminds me of folks who say we don't need to wire, or "I don't like to wire", why...they never learned and can't do it well! Maybe after MANY years!

Also, there are those folks that say "I've been doing bonsai for 20 years" ...

who keep doing the same year over and over and over...

I call this "Groundhog Day Bonsai"

Dale

Dale,
Right on- GroundHog day it is. The reason I started going to Boon's Intensives was because I just couldn't see the steady level of improvement that I wanted to see. Too many half done trees that were continually set aside for "another year of growth". Understanding where you are in the "Bonsai space and time continuum" can be very unnerving for some, who after 10-20 years of going to club meetings, who can't accept the fact that neither they or their trees are advancing.

I think Joe Harris said it best (this is both the paraphrasing of a quote told me by someone else and an extension of something Joe told me one time... follow that?)

Wiring is bonsai, bonsai are wired.

Or soemthing like that,
John

Deadwood is very useful as a bonsai tool it can lead the eye to a interesting aspect of the tree, make i appear more 3D and of course implies age. If done correctly it can make a good tree great. Of course, people are entitled to their opinions but walking out of a bonsai conference is uncalled for.

I'll get some photos for you when I go back to my village over xmas. You can find a lot of deadwood where I live, as farm animals rub against the trees, although it means the lower branches get covered in sheep's wool and turd. Looks pretty funny! Those are the yamadori I won't dig.

And could you tell me, what does 'groundhog day' mean?

American idioms + me = duh? Haha

I'm so sorry Gringo,
I didn't realize.
"Groundhog Day" is a quasi-holiday in the USA where, as legend has it, a groundhog in Pennsylvania comes out of his burrow and if he sees his shadow there will be 6 more months of winter...basically.
But, A Google of it might explain better for you.
But,
My comment refers to a Bill Murray movie called "Groundhog Day' in which he is a news reporter who goes each year to report on this festive Pennsylvania "holiday" and finds himself trapped into reliving every day over and over for weeks until he gets a girl to fall in love.
As I said, Google will explain better

The term "Groundhog Day Bonsai" I use means that folks keep doing the same thing over and over for years and nothing changes!

sorry I confused you!

Dale

Wink

I'm amazed that anyone would object to deadwood on a Bonsai. I can't think of anything which will make a tree look aged and dignified as quickly as shari or jin.
Unless these are really ( snort )!! City Folks !!, that have never been to the woods and seen dead trees. Which is why , I guess, top cat is taking them pictures to show them. Makes sence.

I'm with Malix , Nature is a Master of tree design . Well heck , Mother Nature puts Jin and shari on trees , and she can't be wrong. Right? Good Luck TC

"6 more months of winter."

It's 6 more WEEKS of winter--unless you live in Pennnsylvania, upstate New York or Canada, where winter lasts until June...

Ripper Tree Beard,
I was heading to the end of this thread to ask if anyone had deciduous tree deadwood pics. I think they are some trees that only a mother could love but they definetly are showing age and struggle.
Some it seems are very eager to write off deciduous deadwood. Or maybe it should be called soft wood deadwood?
