Photo REQ: Deadwood on Real trees

Hi all,

I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me out. I'm hoping to write my first article for my local bonsai club and I want to tackle the issue of deadwood in Bonsai.

Because of the location I live there are not many trees with deadwood on them and there is a lot of debate in the club about the use of deadwood in bonsai, with some members believing it has no place and should not be used. I'm hoping to enlighten them by writing an article and showing pictures of real trees with natural deadwood.

SO.. does anyone have any good photo's of trees with deadwood?

Please post the pictures on the thread.

Thanks

Refer to the second pic in this thread:

http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthread.php?t=17508

This pic was taken in a Yew mountain forest in Taiwan. It was very common to see yew trees with 30 ft or more of deadwood, and then living growth coming from limbs lower down on the trees. Prior to having seen this for myself, I too had not been n overwhelming fan on deadwood other than junipers. Needless to say, seeing it in person changed my whole perspective.
I will see if I have more pics of trees with dead wood.

Thank's for the picture, that is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for.

I'm personally not a 'massive' user of deadwood on my bonsai but I take the view that it 'has it's place in bonsai' just as it does in nature and to exclude it as an option when designing a bonsai is limiting.

Hopefully by showing the club members more natural trees with deadwood they will be more accomodating when judging a tree which has deadwood as part of the design.

I'm curious,
are these people pretty new to bonsai who have maybe never seen a convention, good display, big collection ?

Heres a couple pics that I THINK were posted by Boon somewhere.

Wow those are some impresive trees. The one true master of tree design is Nature.

Sadly they are not new to bonsai but for some reason have a very negative view of deadwood. We have some fantastic bonsai with deadwood carving at the club shows but they are consistantly overlooked and never give any respect. It's sad really because it has made a few people leave because of it.

Thanks for all the pictures so far, they are great

As is the way of many issues like this in bonsai it is usually those who cannot do a particular thing, in this case create dead wood, that justify their inability to accomplish such a thing as being not proper to the art of bonsai. Simply remind them that this practice goes back to the very early days of bonsai, has continued through its entire history, and is practiced to this day. The world's most acclaimed bonsai master, Masahiko Kimura has turned the working on dead wood into an art unto itself. Some may not like it but trying to justify themselves by saying that it does not belong in bonsai is just simply an empty argument, and wrong. However; once you get into it, you will discover that it takes a good deal of artistic skill to sculpt dead wood and to judge and understand where it belongs and where it does not. It is for this reason that many who try fail. Some who fail try again and again and eventually gain and understanding. Some give up and spend the rest of their lives claiming that it is an artificial, and false aspect of bonsai and should not be part of the craft/art.

Well said Vance! I'm not a fan of deadwood in particular but I greatly admire the trees I see with this feature added either by nature or the hand of man.
I am collect a yamadori juniper early next year and will be trying my first deadwood carving on it in a year or two. I am looking forward to it.
