I think on the face of it the idea is a good one and could be educational as well as entertaining. However making it a contest like the styling contest could be a real problem due to the fact that the quality of photography is often determined by the quality of the equipment used. In other words it is not likely my Nikon D70 will be able to produce the results a Haselblad large format might produce, or an instamatic probably wont compete with my Nikon. The likelyhood of a level playing field is slim.

Yeah, but when has that ever stopped us?

After all, a disposable with the price tag slapped over the lens has a lot better chance against a D70 in photo contest than Will Heath has against me in a styling contest.

....er....even if we didn't both withdraw. Or something. Yeah. Nevermind.

Maybe you could explain what you mean a little more about your idea for a photo competition. I don't understand exactly what you're talking about. Actually I have no idea. It sounds interesting though.

Regards,

Matt

Hi Tucker, I understand it's an idea. I just want to know more because I don't think I understand what the photo competition is actually about. Without knowing more, I wouldn't be worried so much about the camera. As in bonsai, the subject (stock) is really the defining element.

But if you can't give me any hints I can guess... People are supposed to photograph bonsai? or inspirational trees? ...or anything?

Regards,

Matt

They used to run a photo competition in the old 'Bonsai' magazine. If I recall, the idea was to judge the quality of the photograph, in terms of lighting, composition, focus etc rather than to judge the content of the photograph.

I think this is what Tucker is suggesting, but I think it might be difficult for a well photographed mallsai to compete on equal terms with a badly photographed masterpiece...

Regards,

Chris.
