Phoenix Graft??

I have some great pieces of cypress driftwood and would like to use some of them in plantings. Is a Phoenix graft defined as a tree planted in the soil with the piece of wood incorporated into the specimen (tree wrapped around the wood)? What would be a good plant to use? My pieces of driftwood vary from 1 1/2 feet tall to 3 feet tall. Also, I know I've seen the thread before, but what is the consensus best way to clean the white stains off of the bonsai pots? Thanks in advance.

I think the idea for the tanuki (phoenix) graft is the opposite: driftwood wrapping around the tree. Most people use conifers such as procumbens juniper for a phoenix graft but there's nothing written in stone (I have one using a young bougainvilea).

Regarding your second question, I use white vinegar and it gets the job done.

Usally I think looks better when the tree is imbeded into the wood rather than just wrapped.I would really like to see pics of your driftwood if possible .
