Cool Peter Adams Lathe wood cage.

I recently purchased Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams. In it he makes mention to placing bonsai "inside a lathe wood cage" to protect them from harsh summer weather. I can get an idea of what he means by this but I think I would benifit from pictures or even designs on building one.
He also mentions that they are used on mature trees in fields wich confuses me more

Brett it is basically a shade house but the poms and our friends from the U,S call them lathe houses. Hope this leaves less confused.
Lathes are strips of wood or battens nailed to a box frame in Australia you would need to used treated pine, unless you can afford Jarrah.

Ok I think why I am much confused is I had my trees in a shade house this summer and ended up with more trouble than ever. Mainly the hornbeams and maples.
If I can get past this leaf burn I will be so much better off

There are some pictures that show a lathe house at this link:

There is also a type that is criss cross patterned for more shade.

Ok I get it know. There is not really shade cloth but can be some at top. This whould give dappled shade. That makes alot of sense now and is similar to what I have in mind for next season.
Like Wolfgangs benches

Try adding a bit more sphagnum moss. If you do not use it start it is used in Japan where their summers are a lot cooler than ours. Where you are it is certainly hot.
They cut it up a friend of mine who lives it the Darling ranges swears by it. Hope this helps Pup

soltan where are you in Aus? i'm up at rockhampton Qld where the heat zone is 8/9. I have a few trident maples and had to use 50% shade cloth to protect from leaf burn. It seemed to work ok even at a few days at 43 degess celsius . I havent tried hornbeans but would be interested in trying if i could find one? as for japanese maples, a mate of mine has one up here and even the shade cloth i'sent enough protection.

The shade cloth I have been using is 70% and with vertually no wind getting in. I have been told that this has caused my leaves to be tender and then they have surcum to heat damage. Possibly some drying as well. I am very unsure but the fact is Ray Nesci Bonsai nursery grows them in full sun at the nursery. I have always thought that he has cooler climate there being 5 hours away in the hills. Ray has assured me that this is not the case. Or specificly not my problem.
I am going to try more unprotected dappled shade next year and also try some soil mixes that allow me to constantly water.
I am in Parkes NSW I think 43 Deg celcious days were fairly common in the middle of summer.
I love the hornbeam, This is the first one I got(bit of a twig but I like it) a Korean hornbeam. It had the most amazing autum colour when I got it of Ray but I have not had healthy leaves in autum to repeat yet.
First pic as I got it
second the amazing autum colour and pattern up close, there can be three different colours on the one leaf like this
Third good times at Christmas
Fourth no autum colours again this year

Where? In the mix? On the soil surface? On the shadehouse roof?

Maybe the confusion was due to spelling. A lathe (plural: lathes) is a device for turning wood while it is shaped. A lath (plural: laths) is a strip of wood; hence, 'lath' house.
