Pet rocks

Hello,

I made a cool bonsai discovery recently at the local pet shop, of all places. I found some great looking rocks for root-over-rock plantings. The rocks were intended for aquariums. The ones I found were "cave" rocks, or that's what I was told. They also had a few big rocks that looked good for rock plantings, the hollowed out type for fish to swim in. I steered clear of some of the types of rock. I doubt that they are all appropiate for bonsai.

Anyway, see for yourself and post your discoveries.

I've also seen these rocks around in various pet shops. Some of them have been dyed or painted bright colours and wouldn't suit but the unpainted ones would look great with root over rock or a small group planting on them.

Another idea, along the same lines, is big lumps of driftwood, often sold at aquatic retailers. My local one has quite large pieces (12" across) in wierd and wonderful Kimura-esque shapes.
Obviously not suitable for root over rock, but very suitable for phoenix grafts.

Thanks Treebeard. They had some of that driftwood. I'll have to look into the phoenix graft thing. Thanks
