Pesky birds, what do I do?

I came home this evening to find every pot on my porch violated. At first I thought... 'damn cats'. But then I noticed the plum seeds I was trying to germinate were dug up, cracked open and eaten. So I'm assuming it was birds. Anyway, they left a HUGE mess all over the place, plus all my trees' roots were exposed because the dirt was flung out. The only one they didn't get was my azalea and I'm assuming it was because it is potted in kanuma.

What I want to know is how to deter these pests. Could anyone give me some tips please? I'm sure they will be back, especially since they found goodies last time.
Thanks,
-Justin

Sounds to me like it was squirrels going after the nuts/seeds.
Chicken wire over the soil will do the job. A fake snake will work too I've heard.

Good luck,...Hector

I feel you pain It sounds like it could be either birds or squirrels. Have you tried bird netting? you can get a roll for a fairly small price from home depot or lowe's. It's a black plastic mesh you drape over the tree, pot and all. Really works to deter birds and you can water/weed right through it (1/4" square grid) I have squirrels too and it keeps them out as well. And possums and raccoons. Hope this helps

LOL! That thing is awesome! The poor neighbor cats would hate it though. I think maybe I'll cover the soil with netting. Draping my trees with bird netting would seem like they were in quarantine.

I hate tree rats, try a little Chili pepper or Jallapeno juice, they don't seem to like anything hot.

I take it that nothing in pepper juice can harm a tree?
