Penjing or whatever
Hi,
I'm quite enchanted by all the chinese looking stones, boats, figures and pagodas that I have seen. So I feel like make my own scene. Im a beginner in Bonsai and from what I can see the actual trees they use in these scenes are not contained in pots and there is hardly any soil either. Just a shallow pool of water. How to make one and is this penjing or what? Cheers, Simon |

There is soil. Plants can't grow in shallow containers of water. Penjing is not hydroponics. The soil is artfully included in such compositions, usually under a covering of moss that may make it inconspicuous.

These kinds of plantings are difficult and it often takes years to develop the material's roots adequately to survive in this kind of environment. I would strongly suggest that you do everything you can to educate yourself before attempting to do what you have described.

Thanks All
I am really in awe of these penjing. And whats more, in China for once I feel I can bragg about having access to the special shops and suppliers. Yippee. But I better get more experience in standard Bonsai first.
I think this Penjing needs a seperate section on the forum as there is so much to this art. And we should feature it more to help promote it and make it easy for visitors. What do the Moderators think. |

Bad idea. Do a search on Penjing. How many posts come up?

I agree that Penjing should be promoted and discussed more, as should saikei, sueseki, hon non bo, and even "plant art" (as per Lenz).
The idea of a separate section has come up a lot, but has not had the support yet. Instead, we just lump them all under the broad heading of "bonsai" ... with the interesting result that bonsai is now a sub-category of the broad category of "bonsai" ![]() pootsie |
