Paper Bark Maple

Hey all, some advice if you will

I am getting some Paper Bark Maple (Acer Griseum?) seeds through a trade for a young pine seedling, and i was wondering if the Paper Bark Maple makes a good Bonsai candidate? i did a good search of the forum but couldnt find anything about it so i thought id ask.

Cheers
Rowan

Hi Rowan,

It's probably not the best bonsai candidate - you'd do better with Japanese maple or trident maple, I expect. Nonetheless, I really like maples of all species and so I've working on a big one (3" trunk) that I bought a year or so back. I'm just not optimistic that it'll turn out to be anything.

Best wishes,
Carl

I have grown them for bonsai and they have lovely bark but they have large leaves, stiff growth and long internodes.
After working for many years I eventually sold them off to work with more rewarding material.
Good luck.

Ok thanks, maybe working from seed i can get a good amount of leaf reduction in before they reach maturity.

Cheers

Am I missing something?

I thought that leaf reduction was an annual process, and that this year's reduction had little to do with next year's leaf size.

Also thought that it should be forgotten while developing trees, and only used in preparation for exhibit.

i think you are right, but i have found with some trees that i am able to reduce leaf size somewhat by pinching out leaves that are very big, and so the tree puts out smaller leaves in its place, this is my theory and i think from what you all have said, it might be interesting to try with these maples.
