Finished product.

Plenty of pinching and wiring to come for this one thru this season. I like the new look of this tree, and feel that it has more purpose than it did before.

Working shots...

Shot 1 shows the plant finished and ready for repotting. Obviously from the size of the bump in the finished pfoto, there is a lot of root ball to wittle away over the next few years.

Shot 2 shows the branches stubs left from the 2 that were removed.

Thanks, AJKeppler

Hi Al,

Sorry to be a naysayer, but this one doesn't work for me. It a matter of lines and matter of rootball preparation.

I don't see flowing lines to this semi-cascade; maybe good foliage pads will help but the trunk doesn't move for me.

And that "hump" above where the trunk emerges? It looks like a tree has been take out of its pot and leaned, at a sharp angle, in another one. (Which, in effect, it has.) I think that part of the problem is that the rootball clearly needs a couple of years' work to adjust to the new planting angle - and so it looks badly out of place in this small show-quality pot.

Best regards,
Carl

Can't argue with any of those, course I haven't seen too many kishu semi cascade junipers sticking out of any cliffs here for me to take either. I will just have to work with what is here and make adjustments along the way.

All shohin must be worked in small pots. Planting them in large pots will cause them to spread and lose density. Pinching will help, and losing more of the roots over 2 or 3 repots will bring this root ball into proportion. Not every plant that goes through initial stying is going to be ready for Gafu-Ten. This is a first rough styling of a semi cascade juniper taken from an informal upright plant. I still think in the big picture the plant as it is now will be better in the long run than what it was before I started.

Take for instance this kishu that I styled last week end. This was a typical Mas Ishii kishu ball that he sells. The plant was rough styled in an afternoon and repotted. This plant already in one styling posesses many more attributes necessary for a proper Moyogi. This plant that I styled today was never going to be the plant that this one is or will be.

I feel it is a great improvement! I think this one will come into its own in time. If not it would look great in a cliff landscape scene.

The tree was placed into it's final pot earlier this year. The foliage is growing away and it recieved a little pinching today to keep up. The root mass is much better today and I think the vision I had three years ago has paid off.

What say you?

Wow! Excellent. Its hard to monitor progress, as they grow so "slow". The pictures really show how the tree has progressed. It's on my desktop this week.

Hey Al,
Looks great. Nice progress in three short years. I anm here on BT because when I went outside to go look at gardens- it started to rain, and I think actually got warmer than the 88 degrees they say it is. So, back to the room to get over 30 hours of flying.......

Anyway, view from my hotel window. King and Queen of Thailand- 80th birthday or some such thing, has been a gala since December. Apparently.
