P. Densiflora 'Umbraculifera" ideas and thoughts

Howdy everyone I found this P desn, Umbra marked clearance and priced at 60 bucks. I though well if it doesn't work out for Bonsai it will look splendid in the garden for a long while, so I picked it up. The cashier was actually pretty peeved at me because the owner gave me such a good deal.

Anyway I'd like to get some feed back on what everyone thinks my options are for future development. I plan on doing a little pre style pruning this fall, but no repotting or transplanting.

I can't really tell if it has a graft scar or not? There is a line where the bark changes and it pretty obvious, but I'm not sure if it is really a graft scar or not? any thoughts?

It is about 2.5 inch caliper and is in a 8 gallon container.

thanks,
-Ethan

Most of the densifloras I have seen offered are grafted unless they were raised from seed for bonsai (and even some bonsai densiflora are grafts) This does look like a graft to me based on that transition point in caliper.

In order to decide how to go forward with this you'll probably need to examine the root base and clean out the congestion of branches to see if there is a logical continuation of the trunk, how it tapers, etc.

You very likely might wind up with a new planting angle on the main trunk \ or / for example.

Regards,

Matt

P.S. sounds like the cashier is the owner's spouse or business partner - otherwise I don't know why s/he would care about the price?

All of the Umbrella type Densifloras are grafted. However this cultivar is probably not the best choice for a bonsai due to the way it grows. It is in fact a cultivar that grows more like a globe Arbor Vitae than a Pine and as such it is generally grafted onto an upright trunk to get this interesting umbrella plant that looks great in a land scape. You might be able to produce a bonsai out of this tree but I would not choose this tree given a choice. I think I can tell you it will fight you all the way.

Well I figured as much but I was prepared to use it in the landscape.

It might work out with some serious work, I'd like to use it to learn grafting on the lower trunk, to cover that scar...
