I use galvanized wire for the screen on all my trees for 20 years or so and my trees seem to be ok with it. Perhaps they would be even better without it?

Isn't it a copper nail that kills trees?

I've always heard it's a ring of copper nails, like girdling.

I too use the plastic mesh. What I do is get a different color each year. Just a quick turn over of the pot and you can tell what year you repotted you tree.

If you have a large collection it becomes very valuable and sometimes the memory fades over time. There have been times I turn over a pot and find 3 or 4 years have passed. But it seems like yesterday...

Perhaps it is a rumor that was started by the copper nail industry, after they stopped making Conestoga wagons?
