Ouachita Mt. Oaks
Last Weekend, my wife and I took a trip up to the Ouachita Mountains in Central Arkansas to see the fall foliage. the color was amazing. At one of the many scenic pullovers along the drive, we came across the site in the pictures below. These are white oaks that grow atop Queen Wilhelmina peak. They are absolutley amazing, dwarfed by the conditions on the top of this mountain. these trees average 200 years in age, they are nature's bonsai.

And another picture. The top of this mountain averages 68 inches annual rainfall, but because of the hard rocky soil, it provides only the minimum nutrients to the trees. The wind on top of the peak constantly whips at these trees shaping, and contributing to their dwarfed condition.

Dwarf Oaks
Ralph; It looks like you had a good time, Thanks for the pictures. Here locally (fresno Ca.) we have a natural dwarf white oak that in nature will grow a 4in trunk on an Oak tree that is only 8' tall and several hundred years old. My oldest tree is 10 years old growing in the ground and only about 12in tall. I am afraid that by the time it is big enough to be a bonsai I will be to old to enjoy it. Still I have about 100 of them in lthe ground and growing so someone will get to enjoy them.

Thanks for the pics, Ralph. That must have been the Talimena drive you were on. That's a pretty area. Since I live in OK. thats about the closest mountains to me and I always enjoy visiting.
