OTT Turntable ;)

Back last November I made a trade with another member, Jay. I got some of his very nice pots, he got the promise of a custom made one-of-a-kind turntable.

Well I finally finished it last week, it is in the post to him right now.

I thought it might be interesting for others to see a different method (and materials) for making a turntable... it is a bit OTT but there you go...

After designing the thing on the computer, I machine out the inner shape complete with apertures for the bearings (for those in the know it is milled out on a Bridgeport 520 CNC mill).

Here you can see the finished apertures, the inner shape is being finished with the cutter in the picture. The material is polypropylene.

After the body is finished, I turned the feet out of some ertalyte (plastic). They are threaded, so they will screw into the underneath of the base. Here you see them halfway through being turned on a Doosan 280 CNC lathe. 4 of these feet are made.

Next the top is cut from 2mm aluminium plate. A small boss is fitted to the centre. This boss will snugly fit into the middle of the main body.

The next step is to glue the cork sheet onto the top of the ali plate. You can see the cork sheet in the picture.

These are the 8 sets of bearings that support the outer edge of the top plate.

Here you see the apertures round the outside that will take the bearings that in turn support the outer edge of the top plate.

You can also see the recess in the centre that the thrust bearing fits into, which in turn has the boss on the top plate fitted into it.

There is another thrust bearing fitted underneath the main body. When the top plate is fitted, the central boss on the plate extends throught the main body to enable a big washer to be bolted on. This captures the top plate, you cannot remove it without undoing the bottom bolt.

So there you have it. One bonsai turntable manufactured on computer controlled machinery, complete with high tech thrust bearings and custom designed radial outer bearing fittings. It took about 25 hours from start to finish.

Regards,

TB/Chris.
