Organic fertilizer and Labradors

I just wanted to let everyone know that Organic fertilizer and Labrador Retrievers don't mix. Well, actually they do mix, just not in a very artistic way.

Be warned. I had a 6:50am repotting session today. Hopefully I didn't use enough Sevin to kill her.

fuming still,
wf

Oh dear, that isn't good at all. Thinking good thoughts for the dog.

I learned long ago that my lab will do anything to get to organic fertilizers. His favorite is fish-based, and once opened a cabinet door, pulled a bag off the shelf and ate out of it like a horse and a grain bag. Ate two pounds or so of the Alaska Fish Fertilzer. Stank like a, well, dead fish and left some killer "dog pies" in the yard, but two plus years later he is still here. Bottom feeding habits and all.

I am at the point that unless I am 100% sure the dog can't get up to the pots - he likes to climb on benches as well, I will use the granular fish fert and mix it into the top of the soil/put a bunch just under the surface of the soil. I catch him chomping on pumice every now and then, but for the most part I have figured out I can keep a fair amount of fish on the trees and not have dog issues.

Good luck with your gal, and I too hope there are no Sevin-related issues...

If you read my poo-ball recipe in two other threads you'd notice that i don't use Sevin, or any other type insecticide, for EXACTLY these reasons. I've never had probs with maggots under my fert cubes( which are completely dried before use), but, even if I had....would some maggots under them once ina while hurt ANYTHING?

When I made up my fert balls and left them to dry, the rats ate them all. Ate them? GORGED on them. Feasted. Dance, sang, and threw parties. You can just picture the rodent conga-line. They were gone completely overnight. (no poison used, at all)

When I gave my trees a dose of fish fert last summer, the dog spent hours sniffing and investigating the pots. "Mommy, there's a FISH in here somewhere!" And it smelled like the pier at high tide.

My trees are doing great with Miracle-Gro, diluted and given fairly often. Maybe they could do better with organics.... but it's a trade-off. None of the beasties are at all interested in Miracle-Gro, and it's easy.

I went through a whole 10 lb bag of organic balled fert in an afternoon, as the local squirrel population passed the word that the smorgasbord was open in my backyard. I watched about $25 worth of the stuff run straight up the trees in the woods behind the house --another reason I don't use it anymore.

Thanks all for your concern. She's still kickin, though she's showing an annoying new sustained interest in my plant table now.

Yup, I gave up on organic fertilizer balls for that reason. I will sometimes use diluted fish emulsion to complement my water soluble fertilizers and my labs certainly take immediate notice. They are each about 100 pounds but they have an uncanny ability to avoid my benches depite galloping at full speed, thank goodness!
