... is anothers treasure.
I've been told that this particular little tree does not have any future and should be dumped in the ground or compost heap. I mean, it has no decent roots to show and has an inverse taper. BUT I want to keep this tree and turn it into something grand.... Anyone willing to offer suggestions on how you'd go about achieving this? Thanks to any who will offer suggestions. PS. It's a Pyracantha I believe NB#edited to make post more congenial Last edited by Aberael : 9-Dec-2006 at 09:26 AM. |

Are you asking or demanding. Guess you are not really expecting any comments or suggestions. I did have one or two but have decided to keep them to myself. |

Hi Ab,
There are methods to help elimanate reverse taper... Called the pin hole method. Never done that myself. Another thought would be to do a trunk chop below the RT. Perhaps someone who has done the above will kindly chime in and give more details. All of us here at Bonsaitalk are here to share old ways as well as new ways with out judging wether or not it is a suitable material for Bonsai. Irene (Mom)

Jab it with a pin in the areas I'd like to thicken up? Have heard of this. Would like to see some photo comformation before I perform tree acupuncture. Also, will a tree sprout new shoots from the cut? having never performed a trunk chop before... |

if you think this one might be worth it one day then i'd just let it grow for a year or two to see how it does and let it recover from the obvious pruning and being moved. another helpful word of advice, when asking advice try not to prevent people from saying what you don't want to hear, most of the fine people here will not only say it, but explain why if that is how they feel. some of us like playing with throw aways like this just to learn on, others won't take the time, and some, like yourself, are hoping for the best. the one thing you don't want to do with all the knowledge around this forum is prevent yourself from gaining by sharing in it.

I think most trees have some potential if you consider all of the options such as layering, grafting, etc.
In my opinion it comes down to priorities. How badly do I need the tree? I have two commodities that limit my choices: Time and space. 1)Does this tree have possibilities of becoming show quality with the years I have left? 2) Do I really want to give up some of my limited growing area for this tree? I ask myself these two questions everytime I consider buying a tree ... and if I answer no to either of these questions then I buy it anyways. (But at least I've been warned).
