So... What is the secret then? Or was it simply random...luck!?

I have a Glauca Conica (brrr...) since I didn't know better when I purchased it. I hope I can get a bunch of buds on that too eventually since they seem more like a clip n' grow species.

How's The Spruce doing with all the back buds? I was reading a book where mistletoe looks like spruce's buds...but it's really a parasite. I'm sure your's isn't, it just reminded me of you post.

Sincerely,

Todd

It is doing fine. The amount of budding resulting from candle removal this spring is amazing, the back buds are slowly growing, I expect quicker growth next year after pruning back this year. I'll post some more pictures when I get a minute to take some.

No secret really, good soil, lots of high nitrogen fertilizer starting in July, proper candle removal, needle removal, full sun, and back pruning. Time tested techniques, that work if only one gives them a chance.

Well with some help from Vance Wood who has a lot more courage with twisting and bending trunks than I do. This spruce got it's first start toward an idea. A lot of the new buds were knocked off or removed while doing this, some were left.

The spruce is still doing well and acting as though nothing was done to it at all. Below are before and after pictures.

thanks for the update...I like how the tree is doing. I got another spruce from Harold Sasaki. It's a collected piece. i put some moss around it. I've been voluntering time at his place. I figure that is probably the best way to learn...I'm suppose to get a digital camera here soon and will take some pictures when i do. Thanks for the update on the tree, it's looking wonderful

Sincerely,

Todd
