Old wood back budding on Spruce

I was watering a spruce collected 5 years ago in North Dakota and notice that the years of pruning and candle trimming has started to pay off. The is a profusion of back budding happening on this spruce and the candles are plentiful this year. Maybe next year I can re pot again and begin styling.

I apologize in advance for the poor photos, I really should have a coffee in the morning before trying to take pictures. If you look past the blur on the old wood shots, you'll see the buds.

It's a great feeling to see back budding on conifers. Especially on collected ones, gettin new foliage close to the trunk is a great challenge.

When you achieve that, it's the living proof that you are mastering the horticultural aspect of bonsai. It's fairly easy with junipers, but much harder with pines, spruces and firs.

Congratulation for keeping the tree strong and healthy.

I can achieve this on pines, but on spruce? Everytime I go near one they just kark it!

PS stop showing off.

Regards,

Fish.

Will,

Nice going there. I love seeing that happen with pines. Moving the trees into a good soil, needle plucking, and feeding properly seems to do the trick for them. I've yet to enjoy the experience with my hemlocks conifers, though. Maybe on down the road...

From "cark" (kark), Middle English for distress.

Fish.

Stop making stuff up, Fish. It means "croak" and derives from "carcass. "

Hi Will,

That's good to see that the tree is back budding like that. What species is it? Colorado Blue?

All the best,

Aaron

Fish,

When it comes to etymology you seem to be all smoke and no fire. Quit it with the artistry talk and show me the goods.
