Old Ilex

A few years ago Colin Lewis dug up an old ilex vomitorium at my shop. It had been in the ground there since 1938. Not a bad find even if the bottom half of it was dead and rotted out.

He decided a while back that he didn't want it anymore and gave it to me.

Last year I repotted it at a different angle. Actually at 90 degrees from what it was.

I took a hammer and started tapping on the rotten portion of the trunk. Most of it just fell away but what was left is pretty cool. The second picture below shows what was actually the bottom of the trunk. It gives me a nabari of about 16 inches across.

Everything left is alive and leafing out. Even that tall spike in the front.

In a couple years it will be ready to work on. Would be a good demo tree for someone. Especially a carving demo. They lend themselves nicely to that.

Not sure what I am going to do with it. It's nice I like it but I am getting a bit long
in the tooth to handle another big tree. Never know though. I might get a bit antsie ;o)

Hi RonMartin, this is a fantastic tree! You already know it would make a great hollow trunk bonsai, like an old oak tree. The planting angle might have to be changed a little though, because it looks like most of the foliage is on the back side, at least according to the front you showed us here. You should work on it! It is practically finished already! Thanks for showing it! Si

You are right. Now the foliage is all at the back. It is, however, popping out all over the place. Especially on the new top of the trunk.

Given a bit of time to grow and some trimming the planting will work at this angle. Or almost any angle for that matter.

You are right, it will make for a real nice tree. I am weakening. Might just have to keep it

you would certainly be able to show a lot using that holly in a carving demo. Good luck styling/selling it

That tag just has the last potting date and a catalog number on it.
Havent put a price on it. Probably won't. I'll either be keeping it or donating it to some bonsai club or orginization for their use.
Mind you if someone wants to offer a bunch of bucks I can be had )
