Accelerators? Most of them are of the smoke and mirrors type, and do no more than you could do yourself if you had the time and inclination. That's my humble opinion anyway!

Regards,

Chris.

Dial up is dial up. If you have a decent modem with the most recent drivers and a good line, you'll only get so fast.

Satellite connection is great for downloading but horrible for watching any video streams or playing games. The latency is just bad. It's very sufficient if you're just downloading and uploading though.

My DSL gets connected today

All satillite companies that I have heard of use your phone line to send information to their network, and then beam it down to your home through the satillite.

As Mittar said, this causes a horrid lag if you want it for games, video conferencing, etc. But is ok for DOWNLOADING

Uploads will be limitted to 33.6 or 42k, depending on your phone hardware and the phone lines.

For normal web surfing this is fine, but if you upload lots of files (which few people do) your speeds will be the same on satellite as they are on a regular modem

Visit www.dslreports.com for just about all the tips you want to optimise your connection. They are the same procedures the "accelerators" use

Thanks all... had a feeling it (accelorators) were a bit of smoke and mirrors... but thought it best to ask!

I will be moving to an area that has neither cable TV or is close enough to a central phone switch to make DSL viable. or so I have been made to believe. Just checking on all my options!

Thanks for the help and advise

Jay,

I too live in the sticks and can't get high speed internet (other than satellite which is too expensive IMO). I use Netzero HiSpeed ($14.95/mo) and it's not bad. It does not increase speed of large files, but pages load a lot faster. Images are loaded at a low resolution (user preference), but individual images can be refreshed at original resolution if you need it. Music files, attachments, etc are transferred at regular modem speeds, but I find the page load speed increase worth the extra $5 per month. If modem is your only alternative, give Netzero (or Juno, same company) a look.

I spent $50 for an accelerator and it did nothing. I could see absolutely no speed increase and those speed tests at different places on the net changed not at all!

Just got a cable hook-up. It's great.
