I have two prebonsai trees that I'm working on a similar design. One is an Escalonia compakta. The other is a pyracantha Santa Cruz that has a trunk that is more like an oak than a pyracantha. Both are a long ways fromt their final design ... which is why I'm not posting any photos!

I'd suggest almost all deciduous species, and perhaps pines as well.

It's a terrific windswept tree, with semi-cascading branches, I love it.

Thank you for sharing,
Nigel

Judging by the pics I've seen of them RP, I reckon you're correct, but such a tree over here in Europe, if it's not real costly, then it's rare.

Good luck finding a boxwood with branches that sweep down to earth level, then back up. Box tends to grow stiffly upright. A Kingsville with branches like that and a larger trunk will cost (if you can find one) a pretty penny.

This style, which is called "rainbow branch" or something like that in Charles Ceronio's "Bonsai Styles of the World" isn't distinct to live oaks. Ceronio uses it as a "native" South African style in his book, common to older veld species in Africa.

In any case, it's not goign to be an easy one to replicate in bonsai. You need not only drooping branches, but LARGE, TWISTY drooping branches to pull it off. That probably means a deciduous tree with pliable branches that looks good as a broomish bonsai. Any elm, Chinese (I'd use native elm), would probably work. Oak could also work, but it's coarse and you'd have to go very big in size...
