I'm thinking about trying an oak and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which oak would make the best candidate? My main reservation is getting the leaves to reduce to a reasonably small size.
Thanks, Buntaro |

That tree is a beauty, good luck with your plans for it. Thanks for the information, I think I see an oak in my immediate future, the leaf size on this one seems to fall within my desires. Thanks again for the info!

Quercus Rubor is an oak that will grow in your area that will reduce. Quercus agrifolia is also one that reduces very well but is not suited for your climate without taking steps so it doesn't freeze.

Native oaks are another option. WIllow oak (quercus phellos) and Texas live oak (quercus virginiana, var. fusiformis) are both terrific bonsai candidates and hardier in your area than Q. suber or Q. Robur (English oak).
The larger leaved native white and red oaks are problematic in bonsai cluture, as they tend to retain huge leaves, which actually sometimes increase in size under bonsai culture. |
