Oak? ...... as a CASCADE...????
Holly oak volunteer. A dugup. LOVES it in a pot. Big new branch at where I bent it to wire it as a cascade.
Now....wondering if an oak would look "right" as a cascade. Whatcha think? I can still bend that whippy lil twig into just about anything. The "new" branch is started where the first bend was so I wonder if it ...really....wants to go ...UP. |

Why not make it a semi-casacade?
There is a winery outside of Madison, WI that is actually one of the top producer of award winning wines in the country. The owner is from France and his uncle runs a winery there. You have to climb a steep little hill to get up to it. Near the winery buildings is a huge oak that has a dominate limb that falls down the slope of the hill. It is an amazing limb it has more up and down twists than a roller coaster at Six Flags. You would never believe that nature created such a contorted limb. It's thicker than three of me laying back to back. I even pointed it out to my wife who really cares less about my interest in trees and she was impressed. This oak resembled a semi-casacade with that huge dominate limb. Take for what it's worth which isn't much but if you see this tree you would go holycrap! |

Kazoo, your little oak fellow is going to take decades to grow if he's in that little pot. Please consider a growing box or the ground when you next pot him on, because he will put on much quicker growth there.
I have three...no, four.... oaks now. Three in the ground and one in a pot (he's a new acquisition, no time to put him in the ground yet) They grow much happier there in the grow bed and I can pull them up on a regular basis to mess with their roots. As to cascade, why not? Cool! Joanie |

I just put it in that pot to see how it looked. It had started in an itty bitty flower pot where the squirrel planted it. That pot had "Death Dirt" in it. That's what my wife and I call black, spongy, gooshy, mucky POTTING SOIL from the mass merchandisers.
It has grown that 6" branch after NO growth all summer in that muck. I'll move it up after winter. It will STILL take longer than I have left to make any size. |

Nah, you'll be surprised. One of my oaks grew 12" of length and doubled its trunk this growing season. More foliage means more trunk girth, so I hope to tip prune it some and maybe next year we can do as well again.
"Death Dirt" ain't that the truth! I just emergency repotted a cotoneaster for the opposite problem...dusty water resistant container dirt that remained dry despite watering. The top third was damp and nice, the bottom third was fine, but the middle third was like the Mojave desert in July. Terrible. Why can't they all use bonsai soil?![]() Best of luck with this oak, Joanie |

I have a chestnut oak collected from my brother's mountain property that I am developing into a cascade. It has a rather large leaf which does not seem to want to miniaturize. but i think as a full cascade it will be a lovely tree.
