Nursery stock rootball packed with clay

I purchased a jap. maple at the end of last season and stuck it in the ground. Well, I'm going to dig it up this weekend and I am ready to go with a training pot, soil, etc. However there's a problem . . . . the rootball was surrounded by clay. Apparently it helps in moisture retention or something while at the nursery. Anyway, is there an easy way to get rid of the clay without damaging the roots? What do I do here?

I have heard of using a hose to wash the clay away. But I have never done this.

Put the entire rootball in a bucket and fill it over the ball with water. Let it saok for a while and then hose the soil away. Soaking it first loosens the soil.

Thanks for the help. I'll post some pics when its potted (training pot anyway)

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a soil to use? I was originally intending just to use regular potting soil with some vermiculite in it for at least the next couple years. Sound good?
