Don't really know off hand. There is supposedly one in Peachtree City outside of Atlanta though. I have never been there, but I would guess it to be an hour or so from Columbus right off 85 somewhere. If you find a good place though let me know, I am in Atlanta. You maybe could check Columbus and Macon too.

There are a couple of places in Ga, although you're probably going to have to drive a bit to get to them:

Plant City is in clermont

http://www.plantcitybonsai.com/

Bonsai By the Monastery is in Conyers

http://www.bonsaimonk.com/

I've never been to either, although I have bought some stuff from Bonsai by the Monastery via mail order. They are terrific, especially if you're after nice bonsai pots.

At the last meeting of the Atlanta Bonsai Society, there was someone handing out flyers for a nursery in Joneboro, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta on the south side, that specialized in prebonsai stock. Never been there, but looked very interesting. Anyone wishing to visit would need to call ahead for an appointment. Weird, huh?

Not weird at all. In fact, this is quite common practice for specialist operations, which can be run out of someone's home as a sideline business, or as a way to manage a big hobby. Most of the bonsai nureries I know of have very specific open hours (like only on Saturday) or by appointment only...

Better to call ahead than to drive over 50 miles on Monday, like I did, only to find out they're open only on T-W-T...Grove Way Nursery in Northern California...

Ronny,

I use google maps to find plant nurseries (general):
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=plant...ry,+columbus+GA
Call any before going, because some of them only sell "wholesale".

Also from this page (http://www.nurserytrees.com/state%20Georgia.htm)

Cargill Nursery-Landscaping 1126 Virginia St 706-563-5662
Nursery of Lee Bayard 1369 13th St 706-324-3036
Seasonal Concepts Landscaping 4167 Milgen Rd 706-568-0463
To-Mar Garden Center 6301 Macon Rd 706-561-2555

I go to both of these but that would be a haul from Columbus. The Plant City one takes me about an hour and a half to get to, so I imagine you are talking in the area of 4 hours from Columbus. Bonsai by the Monastery is a great place for starter plants, and "finished" tropicals like Ficus, Fukien, and Bougies. They have incredible trees, (lot of Jim Smith trees and Jim? Moody trees too, mostly donated and display only) but most aren't for sale. I can honestly say that when they do get good stock, that it is by far the cheapest. I got a 3 inch trunk Chinese Elm stump, with good taper already in it, and small unrefined branches for only $100. This tree would have been $300 plus anywhere else. I also got a fukien with a 3.5 inch trunk in a tokoname pot for $300 too. They also had a Bald Cypress stump 20inches across with the feeder roots already on it for around 500, and it would have been much more from someone like Guy Guidry. Unfortunately, they only sporadically get this stuff. Their plants, except the tropicals are typically for beginners and most come from Minature Plant Kingdom located in california.. They have incredible prices on starter tropical plants and have ficus, fukien, black olive, and Bougies over a $1000 dollars. If only they had deciduous stuff like that more often... They are top of the line when it comes to tools, soil, and pots. Biggest selection I have seen. You can easily mail order that stuff though. They don't ship trees though. They have young 1 inch thick trunk starter plants of a ridiculuous amount of varieties if you want starter stuff though. They have, right now, (went last week) Cypress (bald, montezuma, and swamp), elm (cork bark, caitlin, seiju, Tawain, and American), Azaleas (literally like 10 different kinds), plums, cherry (several different), Serissas (about 4 different varieties), Bougies (3 or 4 different), Fukiens, Black Olives, Larches, Ezo Spruce, Hornbeams, Zelcovas, JBP, Pomegranite, Pyracantha, JWP, Junipers (3 different kinds. They have a great selection of maples and they have them in several sizes too. They have 100s of ficus' too, alot, and very cheap at that. I don't know how they get ficus so cheap. You can get a Willow leaf with a inch and half trunk about 18 inches high for like $12. They have the biggest "starter" serissas I have ever seen too. They have a bougie in their with a trunk that has to 2ft wide.... Massive. They also have all the plants you need for accent plants, ferns and grasses for pot decoration, etc.

Plant City is in the north Georgia Mountains. It is a gorgeous place, and the owner is really nice. He has more workable, "refined" material, but the price is only fair at best. It is a very nice place though and he has a great selection of tools and pots too, but again, priced a bit more than the monastery. If you want good Deciduous material, especially Kingsville Boxwoods (he has tons of them) and elms then it is better to go there. It would be a LONG haul to get there and back though, but a weekend vacation in the north georgia mountains, a cheap cabin, and some golf would make it a more than worthwhile trip. The area is really pretty.
