Now THAT'S a bald cypress!
From a recent trip to the Pacific Rim collection, two very different approaches to styling a bald cypress.
Myself, I have a decided favorite. But first, I'd be interested to hear other folks' comments... Best regards, Old Mister TREE #1 Last edited by Carl Bergstrom : 29-Nov-2002 at 11:10 PM. |

When i first discovered bonsai, i fell in love with the literati style. the delicate curves, the minimalistic design, the extra shallow pot. It says elegance to me. man, thats a wonderful tree. #1 Is a beautiful tree. Holy Schmoly! what a trunk! It says power and height to me. I love #2 more because i do. thats all... sniff... |

The first one pictured is incredible! It reminds me of trees that I saw in the Ho Rain Forest in Washington state.
For some reason though...the second one is my favorite - it's simple and has a very graceful look. Thanks for sharing the photos! Marsha |

At the risk of giving away my own personal preference, I think that the second tree also does a good job of capturing the essence of a bald cypress - albeit from a more distant vantage point. Here's a classic cypress swamp: (Photo by Paul Wilson) All the best, Carl / OMC

Great examples of Bald Cypress bonsai Carl!!!
Shows both masculine and feminine examples as well. Nr 1 is my favorite for the simple reason--- the power of nature, or nature of power. Awesome tree. Nr 2 is absolutely beautiful as well, but if I had to rank them, this is what they would be. Paul

Two excellent examples of bald cypress styling. Both are seen naturally in nature.. The formal upright maybe not so manicured in nature. They usually are a lot fuller, very busy throughout the branching. No. 2 has been referred to as flat top style. I believe this is a tree styled by Vaughn Banting. More delicate in its branching.
I enjoy both. Here's an interesting one from so. fl.

Wonder what Freud would have to say about #1.
Like them both. #2 does fit the picture of the wild version but #1 definitely says power. Tough choice.
