Not a bonsai, but a lovely sight!

A plum tree in my garden, but its far more than just a fruit tree, especially after the incesant winter!

Very nice photos Mr. Larry...I don't currently have plum or any other prunus varieties close by that I am aware of...I don't get to enjoy the feeling I enjoyed as a youth of seeing and smelling the wonderful blossoms, and hearing the buzz of the busy honey bees also enjoying the blossoms...These photos bring back to me those fond memories...The bark is lovely, and it is nice to see someone else that appreciates the beauty of lichens growing on aged bark...

Thanks for the memories, and thanks for sharing...

Regards
Behr

great pictures larry...we had a big plum tree in our backyard as a kid. where im from in cali, the end of winter symbolized a worse season: the beginning of spring and the frigid winds from alaska (a.k.a. little leaugue).

i guess it's all relative. i mean hot is hot right? no, sometimes it can be a dry heat, and sometimes it can be wet heat. i hate wind though. none of us had heavy coats, so im sure it seemed colder than it really was. after living there (santa maria) for about 20 years, i moved to akita, japan. i learned what real cold was then.

now that i think about it...one of my better memories about plum blossoms happened in tokyo. i barely caught the last subway, and i was walking home from the subway station next to my regular station. in my neighborhood, there was a sumo stable (the famous "takanohana" sumo wrestler lived around the corner from me. i saw him at 7-11 once. BIG is the only word to describe him) and across the street from him was kind of a typical, old house with a high wall surrounding the house and the property. just hanging over the edge of this high wall was the top of two different plum trees: one had white flowers and the other had pink flowers.

i remember thinking then that it was one of the most beautiful things i had ever seen. in the middle of tokyo, in the middle of february, in the middle of the night, next door to a warrior, the delicate plum blossoms swayed in the breeze. it is still one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen.

jeff

ps northern california gets really cold. the sierra's get a lot of snow in the winter! then there is donner pass on the way to lake tahoe. that is the place where the donner family got stranded on their way to the interior of california and cannabalized their own family members. pretty gruesome. cali can get cold. the ocean isnt warm either!
