Newly bought Larix Decidua

Hello,

I bought this Larch today, it's 103 cm high, the trunk is 5 cm in diameter and it is potted in 1991. I sadly don't know it's age. I payed 20 euro or about $24 for it.

How do you think it should be styled (as if it was your tree) and why?

Please share me your thoughts/insides.

Thanks Wessel

We'll the branchs look good on most the tree. You could trunk chop down to 2/3rds your finshed size and add movement to the trunk to devlop a slanting of informal upright or leave it almost it's currant height and form a literali. Though it would take some work putting movement into the trunk.

Windswept?

The left side has 75% more branching than the right - what about a windswept style

Would it be possible to post some different angles?

Windswept - or perhaps lay it down, using the left side for a raft planting?

Weeijk,

I can't see where to go with this one. Hopefully I'm missing something.

Tell us what you had in mind when bought the tree. Presumably you bought it for a reason...hopefully you even had some ideas for future styling. What was it that appealed to you about this piece of material, and what aspects of its character would you like to try to bring out through your styling decisions?

I have to agree with Carl on this one. The tree is gonna look very full in a couple months. But right now, all I can think is that its "too busy". I am thinking that "less is more" is what is needed.

scale it down a bit. Just my opinion of course. I am only going on what is presented here. Perhaps with the other suggestions for more pictures of different angles....

Hi Carl and all others,

I bought this tree for 2 main reasons, 1 was it's nice taper of the lower trunk, second was it's age and the fact that it is standing in this tray since 1991, so it must have a very nice rootball.
I've placed photo's of the 3 other sides, one of them "d" is probably going to be the front in my opinion.

I personally like bonsai from 20-60 cm tall, so I'm going to shorten it.
Look at picture d for my future styling. I will cut the tree down at the bend in the trunk, where is a little banch which will be the new top. In this way the cut will be on the back, so not visuel. The lowest branch will be cut aswell. The first branch will be the future caracter branch, the second will be wired towards the back for the backbranch. As you may see there will be tree main branches left which all will be wired down a little.

I also need a proper pot to place it in, I was thinking of an oval, 40cm long and 20 cm wide.

Hope my thinking is understandable, feel free to comment though.

regards Wessel

How about something like this? Was going to pot it and move the branches down, a bit rushed, I gotta go out now, but you get the idea.

Delboy.

If it were mine, the first thing I would do is to peal the moss from the base of the trunk and nebari. Once you can actually see the nebari then it usually becomes much easier to pick a front. So before I made any cuts I would strongly consider this. If you want to keep the moss simply peel it off in strips and put it in a tray with some normal potting soil in the bottom untill you are ready to use it. Larch back bud fairly well so you should be able to get branches to grow were you want. Or possibly a bud graft.
