Thanks for the reply Matt. I'm most interested to understand why you don't see a cascade in that larger trunk? Does the upright cascade trunk have to be the larger of the two or?? I'm quite enjoying thinking thru options since I exposed these roots only this afternoon
I just found an example somewhat similar to what I've been thinking as an option. In concept similar to this, but with a shorter main trunk section. Mine can be planted at a sharper angle already and I can see lots of backbuds already to develop foliage somewhat freely. http://www.bonsailearningcenter.com...semicascade.gif and even moreso like this http://www.bonsailearningcenter.com...ice/diagram.gif OK, here's an example I really like (from the galleries here) and had this type of shape/style envisioned for my own with similar upper balance but obviously different upper trunk initiation point to match my own candidate. Now earlier today I untangled the roots and then simply replanted in same nursery soil (like potting soil). Afterwards I picked up some bonsai soil and am now planning to repot in a one size larger nursery pot (2 gallon) tomorrow or as early this week as possible. Is it greatly stressed right now? SHould it be repotted ASAP? OK to shape/prune somewhat at same time or is repotting along lots of stress?? Thanks! Last edited by Happy Gilmore : 14-Oct-2003 at 12:49 AM. |

There is a 180 degree bend in the lower trunk of the tree you posted, whereas yours is almost dead straight. This is not to say you couldn't achieve a bend with raffia and copper wire. You might find it difficult to bend the trunk in a two or three inch radius like that without splitting it lengthwise first.
If you want to develop a cascade, as an alternative, you might remove everything but that first branch pair, and begin wiring those around and down. In my opinion, since the existing apex lacks taper and movement, it lacks interest. I typically will not bare root a conifer if I can help it, with some exceptions like bald cypress and dawn redwood. The hair roots begin to die pretty quickly on exposure to air and sunlight. A damp newspaper wrap is usually good for a few hours, same for heeling it into soil. Repotting sooner will be better. Regards, Matt
