Newbie Help, Please
Hi,
I just received a tree that I purchased from ebay, (I know how all of you feel about ebay, but I learned too late). It is a chinese elm and it is potted sideways with many arial roots out of the soil. I want to straighten the tree but am not sure if I should without causing damage. I will try to attach a couple of pictures and I will appreciate any and all help. I am a newbie to the camera also, but here goes. JonERae I will wait to see if the picture is there. |

Jon,
You'll be more likely to get useful responses if you (1) Focus your camera (2) Don't start a new thread for each post. I don't really work with Chinese Elm, so my advice is not worth so much....but my feeling is that this is not the time of year to be doing root work, especially on a tree that has just gone through the mail. Place it in a pot and fill the soil in around the tree, disturbing the root ball as little as possible. Next spring, you can work on the roots. -Carl

I haven't done a Chinese elm in a while either.
To throw my two cents in though .............I've just seen so many of these that need rootwork. Here's a question. Rather than bother with root work. I know wrong time of the year, recent transplant, and taking into consideration that many folks are probably new at this............ What would be wrong with just tying off these big roots with wire? By wrapping wire around the offending root, much like you would a tournequet? Within a year or two the wire would cut off the roots nourishment little by little until it (the root) essentially dies or can easily be cut off without really cutting much of any usefull roots off. |
