Yep, That's exactly what they're geared for. Nothing new for anyone here. The owner of Dallas Bonsai gets constant calls from people who don't frequent the bonsai forums like we do here, and thought it would be nice to somehow help out visually rather than a quick phone conversation. I might add he puts up quite a bit finacially to have his webmaster edit and post the videos on his website, and as you say "all for free". ![]()

I thought the videos were pretty good and should hopefully make beginners much relaxed about root pruning and styling, which is important. Its all well and good reading in books, but being able to see someone work on a tree is heaps better.
The first time I root pruned I was so worried. I remember thinking "What do I do?", "How rough can I be about combing the roots out?", "How much do I remove". I was so damn fearful of killing my tree. I was treating everything with kid gloves, most probably unnecessarily so. Seeing Thomas give the trident a good throttling made me feel more comfortable about doing the same with mine lol. Shake it baby yeah! The pinching Shimpaku was useful too. All very nicely presented, informative and for free, you can't go too wrong.... I think its a valuable resource for newcomers. WTG Thomas! All the best, Aaron

Ron, You should recheck your Mark Twain signature quote and ask yourself if you followed his wisdom with this post. Doesn't seem like you were helping our Thomas J become great.

Old Mark also had a comment or two about those that lay in wait hoping to find fault. Personally I think that there is a place for videos of any kind. Beginner to advanced. "Nothing earth shattering" does not mean nothing good. Calling something "beginners material" does not make it bad. Somewhere there must be a reason for your comments. Maybe one day I will be able to understand the reasons for them. There is no reason for me to recheck my signature block. I know what it is and wouldn't put it there if I didn't believe it. |

Mr. Martin, 1) You seem to be the one laying in wait looking for something negative to say. 2) "Nothing earth shattering", regardless of what you say definately has negative connotations. It can only be interpreted as a negative comment. Synonamous with nothing new, nothing exciting, boring, not worth special attention, a weak effort, etc... 3) "Beginners material" may not make it bad, but in the context of your statement seemed uncomplimentary and bordering on derogatory. As if to say beneath you. 4) The reasons seems obvious for HB's comments. He seemed put off by your out of the blue negative comment towards Thomas' work. 5) I too think you need to recheck your signature block. Cordially, Brian |

To make everyone happy I have changed my signature line. If you really want me to I will go back and change my opinion on the video to match yours and HB Smith’s. You do have opinions on the video don’t you. Hard for me to agree with them if I don’t know what they are. |

It's just a Beginners Video ..... glean from them what you will.... nothing like practical "hands-on" work.
As people advance, they seek out or become aware of other resources more appropriate to their levels of skill. Regards, Ian. |
