New Trident Growth Turning Black.

Take a look of this photo from this morning. The newest growth is turning black, for the last three weeks new growth has been coming out just fine, until this weekends, on a few younger trees in my forrest the topmost branches bunds are turning dark brown/black. I checked moistness with a chopstick for 20mins, seemed right. Any guess?

It has to be a fungal infection.
You should cut off the infected branches and place the tree in full sun. Fungi usually prefer shade.

Do I need to cut the entire branch back the the trunk, or just the where it changes to black?

Don't cut the whole branch.
Just the minimum in order to remove the infected buds. If you have such buds on the trunk or thick branches, remove only the bud together with the base of the bud.

Also, make sure that the soil has very good drainage (the water shouldn't linger on surface) and between waterings let the top half inch of the soil become dry before watering again.

One strong word of caution here. Make sure you sterilize your tools before and after use. You dont want to be spreading this to any other trees, or parts of the same tree. In fact, I would clean your tools after each cut. Make sure you use something that will completely sterilize your tools such as Lysol, or bleach.

...sometimes fungal infections can be a sign of weakened plant (due to root-rot), so be sure that the roots are fine.

I think I fixed the problem by removing the affected growth and watching my watering more carefully. I think I was over-watering.
