New Trees etc etc

Good Day all. Last week I had the good fortune to re-visit the International Bonsai Arboretum in Rochester NY. This is the very well known William (Bill) Valavanis place. I had ordered a couple of bare root trees that were imported from Korea. It is a pleasure to visit Bill’s place. He invited me to attend a lecture/demo/workshop on Forest Bonsai he was giving at the Bonsai Society of Upstate NY. The evening was extremely enjoyable and informative. I only wish I lived closer than the 5 ½ hour drive so I could regularly attend. Anyone with an interest in Bonsai living in the Rochester area would be well served to join this group.

As for my new trees I had ordered, a Snowbell (styrax japonicus), a Korean Hornbeam (carpinus coreana) both bare root imports, and several bare root seedlings. While there I purchased a Japanese Maple, Kiyo Hime. I hope to post some pictures shortly of these trees. Last year I purchased a couple of bare root imports from Bill that are coming along fine. My pocketbook and ability level force me to purchase less developed stock but they are great buys!

To my fellow novices, please, if you haven’t already visit a couple of true Bonsai Nurseries. It is well worth the time and effort. I am very partial to Bill’s place but have visited three others. After visiting a Good Bonsai Nursery, you will appreciate what you can do. You will be able to obtain trees that have been developed for Bonsai. Yes, they are more costly than the stock at Home Depot or the Garden Center. But they are far far more advanced and developed. You will also be able to obtain information (real information) about the trees. They can probably let you know of the Bonsai Clubs in your area. DO IT!
