New Tinker Toy
Every winter I spend a lot of time mixing up soil for the next potting season. I chore that I don't really relish. Especially the mixing of the soil. Sifting the soil is bad enough but the mixing is back breaking.
Found me a new toy to do the job for me. An electric cement mixer Now I Am almost looking forward to winter so I can use it. When all the kids are grown and gone things do get a bit tougher. At one time I could just give them a few bucks and all my soil was sifted, mixed and packaged while I drank coffee and read my bonsai books. Those days are long gone though. The mixer, however, will be cheaper than the kids in the long run. In the short run also. ![]() |

Ron,
Great buy. I have seen many Bonsai Nurseries use such equipment. Certainly the way to go when mixing large quantities. In a previous thread, some members expressed concern that a "mixer" would break up some soil particles to too fine a size, but I dont see that as a major issue. Put plenty of weight in these and they dont turn too fast anyway. Hope the bearings are up to it !!! These sell for about $200 here in the UK - bet it was far cheaper in the U.S.!! All the best. Ian. |

I don't know about cheap in the US. I got mine on a special deal. Was driving down the road and saw a sign for a divorce sale. A different kind of yard sale to say the least. The mixer was there still in the box. I am ashamed to say how little I paid for it ;o) I mixed up about 20 gallons of soil with it yesterday. Took about 5 minutes to do it. Didn't have any problem with the particles breaking down. I did fill the drum up pretty good. Instead of flopping the particles around it just folded them in. I used crushed lava stone and fir bark in the soil I mixed. All looked good when I took it out. The fir bark had quite a bit of moisture in it. That did make them a bit softer and maybe that helped. Time will tell if I wasted my money. |

Tell the truth Ron. You bought it from the "soon-to-be" ex-wife didn't you? And she was smiling when she sold it. Shame on you!!! By the way, does she have anything else to sell? John

Ron,
Very nice. We have used one that the father in law bought to put in a sidewalk in the 50's (serious). No probelm with particle break down, biggest problem is the size gradient that is formed in the mixer, even after screening, the largest particles come to the top. We just do a quick hand mix in the cart after the mix is poured off. Can't imagine potting up all of the growout material without it. (Don't stare at it too long while it is running- can be mesmerizing...... leading to lost productivity due to staring at the mix going round, and round, and round..........) John |
