New to My Collection
Howdy All,
Say hello to the newest addition to my collection. Its a Shimpaku Juniper. I've had my eye on this tree at Bonsai West for a very long time, and I finally was able to get it. Granted it needs much pruning and wiring, but I know it has a great potential! I am bringing this tree to a workshop with Colin Lewis on October 9th. This is a tree from the Murata collection out in Califorina that was purchased and lived its life for the past few years at Bonsai West in Massachusetts. I can't wait to get my hands into this project..This is my first Shimpaku! Thanks!, Anthony* |

Hi Anthony, That seems like great workshop material - and great material is of course the best way to get the most out of a workshop with Colin or any other great teacher and artist. Be sure to post "after" pictures so we can see where the tree is heading. Best wishes, Carl

I agree with Carl. This is great material for the Colin Lewis workshop! I got to see this tree in person this past Saturday and these pictures don't do it justice! I'll be interested to see what design you and Colin work out for this tree!

Make sure you bring plenty of wire with you. Especially the smaller sizes. You are going to need it with Colin teaching the class.
That's a good piece of material should be something nice when you get done with it. |

Thanks Guys...
Adam you're right, the pictures are bad. I need to invest in a better camera..Are you attending any of Colin's classes next week at Bonsai West? There is also a demonstration Sunday afternoon from 1:30-4:30. Anthony* |

Howdy All,
I finally was able to take some pics of the Shimpaku that I took to the Colin Lewis workshop. He really seemed to enjoy the piece, and said it would be a "tasty little tree one day." I really needed alot of wire, and I am still not done with the tiny finishing wire. Watching Colin style a tree is pure magic, and I found his instruction so valuable. Just to show you the kind of teacher he is, we were supposed to end around 4, but Colin went with us through 6...I can't say enough about him. There was so much foilage and branches, not until the workshop with Colin did I discover a nice little piece of deadwood. Pictures are as follows..Enjoy! Anthony* |

Oh yeah! That's definitely heading in the right direction! Thank you for posting the "after" pictures for us.
Isn't it wonderful working with a great artist like Colin and watching a nice piece of stock take shape? Now there'll be lots of light getting in to the interior, the pads will fill out....this is going be a good one! Keep on keeping us posted. Congratulations, Carl

Good lookin' Juniper
I noticed on your tree, as I have seen on other Junipers as well, that the trunk in your before picture was a gray color, and in the after photo it is red and a bit smoother. What was done to the tree to cause this? |

Hukleberry,
With age, junipers develop a gray flaky bark that can be easily removed. I use my fingers, or you u can use other tools for that. Then with a wire brush, you can wear down (going with the grain) the roots, trunk, branches, and pretty much everything on the tree thats been peeled till it gets to a reddish-brownish tone. The color is quite attractive, and seems to get better with age. Think of it as a maintenance issue similar to how a snake sheds its skin. Anthony* |
