New to the forum
Hey dudes,
Just signed up a day or so ago. Been doing this for about 25 years. I have never talk to anyone about it,so I thought what the heck, maybe I will learn new things. I am sureI will. Just joined the San Diego Bonsai club. I have about 90 or so plants that are in different stages. I like to start bonsai from seeds and little sticks taht I buy from catalogues. I like to garden and do Bonsai,it keeps me out of the bars. Sophie is my rottwieller who guards my little plants so I have been lucky not to have had any stolen. But Sophie has had a taste for Hackberrys. I live about 65 miles north east of San Diego in a zone 9. That makes it very nice to grow just about anything anytime. We have a 10 month growing season. I will be looking forward to talking to you good people who share the same interest that I have. Peace out Bob Avocado capital of the world |

Hey dude, I mean Bob,
Boy that's quite a haul to go for a bonsai meeting. I thought mine was bad at around twenty. Anyway, I got my first experience with bonsai when the San Diego club had their Spring show back in 1983. Been hooked ever since. Moved out of San Diego a few months after that and have been doing bonsai Texas Style. Welcome to the forum and hope you'll join in the fun here, even if it does get a little wild every now and then. Say hi to Sophie, and tell her those rawhide bones have a bit more flavor than those Hackberrys. ![]()

Thomas,
Wow thats cool . !983 I wasn't quite there yet . Did you meet Ko or Mas. Two of our founders are still alive and well in there late 80's and still working as japanese gardeners. Might interest you to know we have allmost 400 members now and a very active program. We have a grant program for members to get advanced training to qualify as teachers for our myriad of beginners and intermediate class . We educated about 200 new folks a year thru our beginners class, girl scouts, Japanese friendship garden classes, and local schools. We also have a world class exibit of bonsai at the "Wild Animal park" an offshoot of the world famous San Diego Zoo. This spring we wiil have our 80th bonsai exhibit for the general public that draws about 3000 people. LOts of fun. Everyone is welcome, 2nd sunday of the month.

Nut,
I really can't remember who all I met there the few times I was able to go their meetings, but I really liked the way things were set up there especially how the city provided the hall for the meetings at Balboa Park. Is that where they're still having them? And yeah I remember the huge turnout of members that came to the meetings also. I sure have fond memories of San Diego and especially pertaining to my start in bonsai. Your one lucky guy Nut. If I ever get out that way I'll look you up. ![]()

I am BRAND new to the forum, and I have only 1 small tree that has been with us for 9 years. We bought her in Washington DC and now live in Southern IL. I have no idea what has happened to the tree, but about 2 weeks ago, leaves started shriveling, and although they don't seem to be falling off, they look pretty sickly. I have watered the same way I have always watered, and fed in the same way also. I can post a picture if that would help, but she is pretty sad looking right now.
I am not even sure what kind of tree she is, just a special part of our lives, no matter where we roam! Thanks in advance for ANY help! |
