Thumbs up New Cork Bark Japanese Black Pine

Here is a new cork bark Japanese black pine that I got while I was in Seattle last week from Bonsai Northwest (Pinus thungergii var corticosa or some such thing - the cultivar name was not labeled). It stands about 18 inches high, I think! (can't find the tape measure tonight)

It's a great nursery, I was really impressed with all of their stock. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera and was not able to take pictures of the nursery. They had some very nice pine stock, I also got a Scots/Scotch pine which I will post in a bit. There website is http://www.bonsainw.com but doesn't really do the place justice.

Any thoughts, comments suggestions or virtuals are welcome. I'm just letting it grow for now...

Oh, one more thing - once I took the pictures I realized that the top left branch in the first picture was down too far - it got bent a bit in shipping. I have since moved it up a little bit.

The tape is on it because it was broken slightly and I couldn't find my grafting wax. It's just electrician's tape, but good for grafting or broken branches, too.

so what style you gonna train it in? Theres quite a gap between the lower branch and the next one. Informal upright/slanting?

Will,
This is a long term project. My two cents, Get it into the ground or a larger pot and get it going for several years. Get some reading material and do some research on J.B.P. Good luck!

P.s. To all lurkers check out the awkward graft, when choosing look for a low low graft. This tree will have two distinct trunk barks on the the lower trunk.

Yup Yup.. so be careful in choosingm the front... I guess another thing you could do is slowly knick the trunk and plant it deeper and deeper whenever you repot it, and get to the point where the cork part of the black pine is producing roots.. then you get corky roots!

Yes, it definitely is a long term project. I bought it because I've always been quite taken with cork bark pines and it was just $22. I believe my current plan goes along these lines:

1. Pot it up in a larger pot this fall (it's at least periodically too hot now). We have nice extended falls so it's a good time to repot.
2. Begin air/ground layering it in the spring. Yeah, it will take a while.
3. Grow the lowest branch out as a sacrifice branch to develop the trunk.

And, of course, wait. Fertilize like crazy.

It seems like a good time to work on all of this as the bark is just barely starting to cork, and it seems to be back budding fairly well from their spring trimming. I guess depending on how things go, I may trim down the main trunk... Still have a few years to see.

So, I will also try and get some more pictures of other stuff I have going on. Oh, and generally try to lurk less.
