A New Chinese Elm - Suggestions Welcomed

I recently got a new Chinese Elm. I haven't touched it yet (letting it get used to its new surrounding etc) and was wondering if anyone could give me some of their thoughts on styling it while I get my ideas together also.

I plan on giving it a prune soon though to shorten new shoots and start up on its dense patches.

Heres a pic, sorry if it's not top notch. (after reading Crow's thread about pictures I feel dumb.)

Hi Bonsaigreenhorn,

A couple more pictures from different angles would certainly help. At the moment, virtually all the branches are obscured by leaves. Try posting a few more so peeps can get a good look at it.

All the best,

Aaron

Pics

(The first pic in the #1 post is what I was looking to be the front.)

From that, the pics below are in right, back, left, top order.

I like pic-22537 as the front.

I would think (with the little experience I have) that it needs to be in a grow box for a while to get it where it needs to go.

Regards,
Mark

Thanks for the response Mark. Yes, this was the pot it came in and I definitely plan on putting it in some type of grow box next spring.

Greetings Greenhorn,
I like your elm. My first thought was to do a trunk chop down to one of the
lowest branches and make that the new top mainly because I have a "thing"
about taper and elms do trunk chops really well. But this would mean re
growing the whole tree and could turn into a 5 year project. Been there,
done that and it's worth it. But if not a drastic trunk chop then maybe
just half way. I still can't get past the taper thing. This elm has a nice
fat trunk, and if it tapered properly, it would be amazing. Of course, if
you did this, you might also want to put it into a "growing pot" while it
developed. If you want to work with the whole tree then someone else might
have some good ideas. I appologize for my one track (tapered) mind. I
like the pot too. I happen to have one just like it. Bought it about 20
years ago at the Atlanta flea market. Good luck with your tree.

PS you said you would be doing a root prune soon? I live in Florida too and
I would suggest you wait until the last week of Jan through the end of Feb
to do a root prune. In my humble opinion, it is a bit late to be chopping
roots on elms here.

**Novice Warning....Novice Warning...Novice Warning....Take with a grain of salt...***

I kind of like #22536 as the front... the first picture in the second set. It would be leaning to your right, but the view would be best if rotated slightly clockwise.

Some clipping and growing on the lower branch, and some thinning and wiring on the canopy.....

I would also consider raising the level of the soil slightly under the leaning part of the roots, or perhaps a bit of rock there.... To me, the tree seems underpotted and would benefit from a slightly larger pot, perhaps oval? If it were planted to the left/back of center of a slightly larger pot it would balance the lean a bit.

Does that make sense?

Joanie

I think the roots are ugly. I would layer off the top and then incenerate the roots. I know that Chinese elms from overseas often have this flaw, but this is somewhat extreme. Otherwise I see a lot of possibility in the rest of the tree. My two cents.

Cheers,
Jim

Chinese Elms are in 2 variaties, the ones with kind of airial roots and the "normal" massive tree. So you can't say the roots are ugly, that depends which style you're after.
I think for the future of this tree you should choose either picture 22536, which has the more formal look and turn it a little clockwise, so the first left branch is more to the side (like Joanie suggested) or picture 22537, which has a more dynamic look in my opinion (like cre8tive suggested).
Susieq's idea about chopping the trunk can be done anytime when you're not happy with your tree anymore and you want to change it dramatically.

When you would go for 22536 I think you want to thicken and extent the first left branch to be your caracter branch. Branch 2 will be back branch and 3 will be yr first right branch. Than you have your canope which has to be tinned out. Loose the twig which is now in front.

When you would go for 22537 it's a little more difficult what to do, cause I cant see the tree in life and from the other pics it isnt clear how the branches go.
(at least I dont see it)

Hope this helps a little more, don't forget, it's just MHO.

cheers Wessel
