Neriifolia Pruning....

I recently(2 weeks) pruned and defoliated my Neriifolia and have yet to see any new buds, how long before I will see buds appear? I usually keep it indoors but with the warm weather we've had here in Texas, I've kept it outdoors. Also should I use a particular type of fertilizer for a leafless Neriifolia? Thanks!

James,

You should be seeing buds anyday now.Just to make sure, you might scratch the bark a bit to see if it's green underneath.I can't see any reason for it not to be though. When i totally defoliate and prune nerifolias,it can sometimes take about this long to bud out,but usually it is a bit quicker.

Overwatering is a risk at this stage...be careful.

O.K I'll keep an eye on the watering, I had another question, The weather here in San Antonio is a little strange right now, it got down to mid 40's last night and it's almost 70-75 in during the day, for those cool nights would it be ok to leave the tree outside?

Mr. James,

I have found a good rule of thumb for portecting most tropicals in our area is when the temps are below 40 degrees F. carry them in...However, I often leave mine out even if we have 38 or 39 forecast because it usually does not stay that cold even for a full hour...It quite often reaches the overnight cold just before daybreak and begins to warm back up almost instantly...By the way, the neriifolia can stand lower temperatures than many of the tropical trees we use as bonsai without damage...Just to be on the safe side though, 40 degrees is a good standard...

Regards
Behr
